Recent news in WAC realignment is that the conference plans to add two more schools by the 2013-14 season. While it would be great to get a hold of Montana and Montana State, two programs that are faring quite well in football, that option doesn't seem possible at the moment. Maybe a few more years?
The schools topping the list for possible upgrades look to be Lamar and Sam Houston State. Both schools have historic programs and are consistently at the top of the standings in many sports in the Southland Conference (SLC). If the WAC does choose to add these two schools, that would be the fifth SLC school to join the WAC after Texas State, UTSA and UT-Arlington joined this past year.
An addition of these schools would make 12 total schools for the WAC, and nine football teams that would comprise the conference.
A look at what the divisions would look like if SHSU and Lamar both join:
West:
Seattle
Idaho
San Jose State
Denver
Utah State
New Mexico State
East:
UT-Arlington
Texas State
UTSA
Sam Houston State
Lamar
Lousiana Tech
This move would definitely create easier travel for schools in the east division. We will see soon what the future has in store for the WAC.
